Vacancy (2007)

Vacancy

The Good:

Kate Beckinsale is just awesome. I like her in nearly everything she has ever starred in.
Luke Wilson was good in it too.
There was a lot of very purposeful motion in the film, the camera angles and movement went well with the suspenseful nature of the film.
I like a good suspense-oriented horror, especially one with a simple plot that doesn't try to hard to be clever... I'm looking at you Saw...
The buildup in the movie is done well.

The Bad:

A few of their decisions were questionable, but that is the nature of this genre.
The interactive dynamic between the protagonists was broadcast from the first few lines.
I thought it could have been a tad longer, maybe another 20 minutes or so. I was into it and then it began its last stretch.

Overall:
It was like an updated version of Psycho but with better pacing and less sympathy for the villain. The film is a decent suspense, I must admit, I was a little surprised. And as an aside, I never liked Psycho.

I really never liked Saw. I thought it was contrived and yet another film that promised an ending I couldn't predict yet I predicted it within the first 20 minutes of the film. Then I realized the director/writer cast himself in one of the main roles and was suddenly not surprised that he went down the M. Night Shamalamadingdong road of "I am not nearly as cool or as smart or as original as I think I am". I wanted SO much from that movie and I got SO little.
