Spider-Man 3
I was fortunate enough to be able to see the 12:01 AM showing of Spider-Man 3 last night. The theater was about 95% full and contained a wide range of ages, sexes, races and social economic backgrounds that had gathered for the first taste of a modern icon's new film. It made me happy, hopefully and even more excited to watch the movie.
The Good:
The same cast and crew made the feel of the movie perfectly in line with the previus 2 films.
The score was again awesome, but it's Danny Elfman so what else would you expect.
The special effects were incredible.
It really felt like a comic book brought to life.
It had humor, action, romance, drama and Bruce Campbell (making his 3rd appearance in the trilogy).
The fight scenes were great!
I thought the symbolism was done very well, classic symbolism.
It was a lot of fun to watch.
The Bad:
I found some of the foreshadowing a bit too heavy-handed (In complete honesty, I figured out the complete plot and story sequence in the first half hour).
I would have liked about 5 more minutes of each of the bad guys.
Overall: I really dug this film, I will be purchasing it when it comes out on DVD. I still liked Spider-Man 2 the most, but this is an excellent addition to the series. Good show Mr.Raimi!

You know me - because I loved Spider-Man so much... these movies just never cut it for me. No offense to Mr. Raimi - I love him - he brought me Evil Dead and that is good. However - I walked out of the first one twice and got my money refunded - watched about 10 minutes of the second and turned the channel - and won't even be bothering to see this one as the only comic book icon I like more than Spider-Man is Venom and if they can't get Spidey right (in my humble opinion) then they damn well won't get Venom right. Frankly - unless Peter Jackson is using the team that did the effects in LOTR to animate the Venom sequences - no special effect is ever going to capture him as he should be. I would rather have seen the guy playing Venom's human counterpart playing Peter Parker anyway. At least he can be funny. Peter Parker was all humor - and Toby just delivers those lines with all the gusto of a dead fish. And don't even get me started or KD. Bleh. Gouge my eyes out with a spoon please.
I did think 3 villains was a bit much for this film - particularly when they needed to address the cunundrum of Spidey and the symbiote. They likely could have done without Sandman (though I love the actor who played him) because Sandman was never really cool - and Green Goblin redux was one of the neatest comic strings I read. And Venom... well, enough said:)
I dunno... I'm almost hesitant to watch Spidey 3 because everyone else I've talked to have been terribly disappointed with it. I hear that Venom's potential for development was completely skirted (mainly because, as I understand it, Raimi didn't find Venom interesting... which I simply cannot imagine)
And you already know how much I hate Dunce as MJ... heh
I do genuinely like Toby McGuire as Peter Parker, though, I've always thought he was perfect for the role; and I hear that Topher Grace does a great job as Eddie Brock.
I dunno. If you give it a thumbs up, I'll check it out. I liked the first 2 movies, and I really want to give Raimi the benefit of the doubt. :)
But, I do hope he'll take a break from Spider Man and get to work on Evil Dead 4!!11!
I would say that the icon that was Spider-Man was destroyed by JMS's run on the book and the last 5-10years in the Marvel comic. All the conventions that made Spider-Man what he was over the last 40 years seems to have been forgotten. Norman Osborn returned (no way, he's still dead to me), so did some version of Uncle Ben. Spider-Man is connected with some toem spirit? Blah. JMS must have released all his creative juices on Bab 5. Spidey is defined by his loss, his mistakes. The movie version of Spidey is a better version.
And BTW, Peter Jackson can't direct action and goes completely overboard with special effects (did you see King Kong?). I like his epics and his comedies and his dramas, but so far completely unimpressed with his "action".
I also think the reason they went with Sandman is that he is a completely different type of character than Doc Ock or Norman Osborn. He's a thug. And let's face it, in real life there are more thugs than masterminds.
I never said it was a perfect movie, but is it fun? Absolutely. Is it a masterwork of fiction and innovative genius? No. But it is a well-directed movie that is funny, touching, and a nice end point for a movie serial that I have very much enjoyed, especially compared to the other superhero films as of late (X3 - not even worth panning it was so bad, Ghost Rider - it didn't even have a plot really, Man Thing - yeah there was a Man Thing movie, it sucked... so on). I still hold to my recommendation, I loved the film, it was fun.
Thanks for the comments too guys!
I'm sorry but I will NEVER see the Spidey version as the "better" version of Spidey. And trust me - I'm completely upset about the travesty that 3ish years of Spider-Man - but the Spidey I grew up with is the one I love and Tobey McGuire bless his bland little heart will never get there.
Love John's comment about Dunce. Seriously - she is a HORRIBLE actress. Always has been, always will - and I don't understand how she keeps getting cast as hot girls. Bleh.
